New Jersey Drivers: Your Auto Renewal Is About to Be 10% Uglier. Shop It This Week.
New Jersey is projected to see the biggest state-level auto insurance hike in the country this year at 10.46%, driven by a two-phase increase in mandatory liability limits. Even clean-record drivers get hit.
If You Drive in Nevada, Your Auto Bill Is About to Jump. Shop This Week.
Eleven insurers just got the green light to raise Nevada auto rates through the summer. Allstate goes up 8 percent on July 7. American National General goes up 20.9 percent on July 28. Here is who is hiking, when, and what to do before the renewal letter shows up.
New York Just Made It Harder for Your Auto Insurer to Raise Rates Quietly
The state's Department of Financial Services told carriers on July 1 to bake reform savings into every pending rate filing, or the rate hike gets denied. In November, prior approval kicks in for any 5 percent hike. Here is what changes for you and how to spot it on your renewal.

Auto insurance questions, answered.
What factors affect my auto insurance rate the most?
Driving record, age, location, credit score, and the car you drive. A clean record can save you 20-40% compared to a driver with tickets or accidents. Urban ZIP codes pay more because of theft, traffic, and crash frequency. Credit score is a rating factor in most states, and a newer or pricier vehicle costs more to insure because it costs more to repair or replace. Translation: the carrier prices the risk you bring and the metal you drive.
How can I lower my auto insurance premium?
Pull quotes from at least three carriers once a year. That alone usually beats every other lever. Beyond that, raise your deductible (going from $500 to $1,000 can cut your premium by 15-25%), bundle home and auto, ask about safe-driver and low-mileage discounts, and keep your credit clean. Many carriers also discount paperless billing, paid-in-full policies, or a defensive driving course. The carrier is betting you will not shop. Prove them wrong.
What are state minimum coverage requirements?
Every state except New Hampshire requires drivers to carry a minimum amount of liability insurance. Requirements vary widely. California requires 15/30/5 ($15,000 per person, $30,000 per accident for bodily injury, $5,000 for property damage). Alaska requires 50/100/25. State minimums are the legal floor, not a recommendation. Most insurance pros suggest carrying at least 100/300/100 to protect your assets in a serious accident.
What is gap insurance and do I need it?
Gap insurance covers the difference between what your car is worth and what you still owe on your loan or lease if the car is totaled. If you owe $25,000 but the car is only worth $20,000, gap insurance pays the $5,000 difference. Worth buying if you made a small down payment, have a loan term longer than 60 months, or drive a vehicle that depreciates fast. Once your loan balance drops below your car's market value, cancel it.
Can I switch auto insurance mid-policy?
Yes, you can switch any time. No penalty for canceling before your policy expires, and most carriers refund the unused portion on a pro-rated basis. To switch cleanly: line up the new policy first, confirm the start date, then cancel the old one so the end date matches. Never cancel the old policy before the new one is active. Even a single day without coverage can lead to higher rates and legal trouble.
