Solar Cancellation Deadline

Cancelling inside the window is the only solar exit that costs nothing and leaves no lien behind. Every state has a federal floor of three business days on a sale made at your home. Some states give more. This tool shows the floor, adds a longer state window only where we have read it out of the statute, and gives you a notice to send.

Your contract
Your contract may name a governing state. If it does, use that one.
A lease charges a monthly fee for the equipment. A PPA charges per kilowatt-hour.
Many contracts allow a no-cost cancellation right up to this milestone, which is often longer than any statute.

This tool returns a conservative act-by date, not a legal opinion. Send your notice well before it, by the method your contract names.
How the date is counted: where your state's statute counts Saturdays, or gives more than three days, the date above follows the state rule. Otherwise it counts Monday to Friday. The federal rule counts Saturdays (16 CFR 429.0(f)), so after a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday signing the federal deadline can fall a day or two before the date above, and many state statutes do not say whether Saturday counts. Count Saturday and act by the earlier date. Public holidays are not computed, and some states push a deadline that lands on a holiday to the next day. This is general information, not legal advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Generally, where the sale was made at your home and the price is $25 or more. The rule's text covers "a sale, lease, or rental" of consumer goods or services, and the CFPB says door-to-door solar contracts "may be subject to" it; no agency has said whether it covers a power purchase agreement. Its exclusions include a sale that carries a federal Truth in Lending right of rescission, a sale negotiated at the seller's permanent store, a sale made entirely by mail or phone, and real property, insurance and securities. Under the federal rule, Saturdays count as business days; Sundays and federal holidays do not.
Because we have not yet read that state's home solicitation statute in its own text, and we will not publish a day count we cannot stand behind. You still have the federal three business days, which is what the tool shows you. Your state may well give more, so check your own contract and your state attorney general's consumer pages before you assume the federal floor is the whole answer.
Often it helps a great deal. Statutory windows are measured in days, but many solar agreements tie a no-cost cancellation to a project milestone such as permit submission or a notice to proceed, which can be weeks out. That clause is in your own contract and it governs once the statutory window closes. Read the cancellation section before you conclude you are too late.
Under the federal rule the seller has ten business days to refund your payments, return anything you traded in, cancel and return any negotiable instrument you signed, and terminate any security interest arising out of the transaction. That last part matters in solar, because a security interest is how a UCC-1 filing against your panels gets created. Cancel properly and the lien has no transaction left to attach to.
In writing, by the method your contract names, with proof of delivery you can hold. Certified mail with return receipt is the standard. Send a copy to the finance company on the same day if one funded the deal, because they are a separate party and will not hear about it from the installer as fast as you would like. Our cancellation guide covers what a valid notice contains.
