Update, September 9, 2026: The starting gun went off and almost nobody heard it. Federal Student Aid updated its announcement on August 25 to say Beta 2 is live: âStudents and contributors can now request to participate by visiting StudentAid.gov/joinbeta.â The Department is admitting people in groups, so a request is a place in line rather than an instant login. Everything below still holds, including the part that matters most: what you submit in beta produces your âofficial 2027-28 ISIRs, which institutions should use as the basis for packaging aid.â The public form is still targeted at October 1, which is three weeks out. Go put your name in.
If youâve got a kid starting college in fall 2027, the FAFSA opens for you weeks before it opens for everybody else. And the form you fill out in that early window isnât a practice run. Itâs the real application.
Federal Student Aid published the plan on July 21. Beta testing runs in two rounds. Beta 1 started August 5 with a limited group of school districts, community organizations, and colleges, through in-person and virtual events. Beta 2 is the one that matters to your family, and it opened on August 25. In the Departmentâs own words: âAny student or parent will be able to request to participate in beta testing on StudentAid.gov.â
The word âbetaâ makes this sound like a sandbox. It isnât.
From the same announcement: students in beta âwill complete a real 2027-28 FAFSA formâ and can list up to 20 school codes. What comes out is your official record, the one colleges use to build an aid package. The public form doesnât launch until October 1.
What early filing actually buys you
Not a faster award letter. Be clear on that before you get excited. The Department told colleges thereâs no need to touch those records before the regular award year starts, and expects plenty of them to wait, because their aid software isnât ready yet.
What it buys is being done. State grant money and a good chunk of institutional aid go out first-come, first-served until the pot is empty, and October 1 is the morning several million families all hit the same server. Filing in late August puts you in line before the line exists, with the annoying part behind you.
If youâve filed before, the 2027-28 form should also hurt less. The Department says renewal pre-fill is back, along with a feature that lets a parent reuse their information across a second childâs application. Anyone who has typed the same tax figures twice in one evening knows what thatâs worth.
Do these two things this week
Log in to StudentAid.gov and confirm the account works, for the student and for every parent who has to contribute information. A forgotten password on opening day is how families lose a week for no reason.

One thing to expect. The Department warned colleges that anyone pulling records before October 1 âmight encounter system issues that cause challenges or delays.â Thatâs aimed at aid offices, not at you, and your submission stays official regardless. So if a financial aid officer tells you in September that they canât see your file yet, thatâs the reason. You didnât do it wrong. They just havenât opened the mailbox.
