If you have a Discover it Cash Back sitting in a drawer, pull it out this week. The Q3 rotating category runs through September 30, and for the first time it includes airline tickets. The catch: activation is not retroactive, and the whole account starts moving to Capital One’s app on July 27. If you haven’t clicked activate yet, everything you buy in the category between now and the click earns 1%, not 5%.
The categories for July through September: gas stations and EV charging, flights and public transportation, and drug stores. One shared $1,500 cap on the 5% rate, which caps the reward at $75. Every dollar after that earns 1%. Cashback Match doubles it for the first-year cardholder, so a new-card year turns that $75 into $150.
Airline tickets in a 5% quarterly category is unusual. Discover has cycled through gas, restaurants, groceries, wholesale clubs, and Amazon in past years. Flights sat out. This quarter it lands, and it is the highest-value cell on the card if you buy summer or fall travel between now and September 30.
Here’s the catch. Book through the airline directly. Discover excludes airline tickets bought through Expedia, Priceline, Kayak, and most travel-agent bookings from the flights bonus. Buy from delta.com, southwest.com, united.com, aa.com, jetblue.com. Same trap on the transportation half. Buses, trains, and ferries qualify. Rideshare, car rentals, and parking garages do not. If you rely on Uber, this category is not your win.
Two more edges the fine print swallows. Gas stations affiliated with supermarkets or wholesale clubs (Costco gas, Safeway pumps, some grocery stations) often code as grocery or club, not gas. And pharmacies inside a Target, Walmart, or grocery store usually code as retail, not drug store. If you plan to lean on the category for a big charge, run a small test transaction and check how it posts before you commit.
Verdict: smart. $75 in real cash back for two clicks and a couple of already-planned charges. If you get Cashback Match, $150. If you were going to book a flight for Thanksgiving or Christmas before September 30, do it on this card and take the 5%.
Move this week.
Log into Discover.com or the Discover app and activate the Q3 categories today. Every category swipe before you activate earns 1% instead of 5%, and Discover does not go back and fix it.
Book the flight from the airline’s own site. Delta, Southwest, United, American, JetBlue, Alaska. Not the online travel agency. If the direct-airline price is $30 higher than the aggregator, the 5% pays it back and then some on any fare above about $600.
Fill up on gas at a standalone station, not the Costco pump.
Then plan around July 27. Your account starts moving to Capital One’s website and app that week, in waves rolling through early 2027. Your card number and physical card do not change if you are the primary holder. Your login does. Set up a Capital One username and password before your account moves so you can see your Q3 bonus tracking without a scramble. Any authorized user on the account will get a new card number, so update autopay wherever their card is stored.
Two categories carry over on Capital One’s side: 5% on Capital One Travel and 5% on Capital One Entertainment. What you lose: the ability to redeem cash back against your minimum monthly payment, and Pay with Rewards through Apple Pay. Neither is worth adjusting the strategy over. The move is still: activate today, book direct, take the $75.
