If you still owe Bright Lending on a loan from 2020 through 2024, that balance is set to go to zero. If the loan you owe is from 2025 or this year, it isnât.
Same lender, same rates, different year. That one date decides whether this settlement helps you.
What Bright Lending charged
Bright Lending says itâs owned by Aaniiih Nakoda Finance, an entity of Montanaâs Fort Belknap Indian Community. The lawsuit says the business is really run by non-tribal outsiders who borrowed the tribeâs name. A Chicago borrower named Curtis Dixon sued in 2024. His complaint says his first loan, for $1,250, carried an APR of 598.5461%. Paid on schedule, it would have cost $7,730.25. Illinois caps most consumer loans at 36%.
The defendants deny wrongdoing. They agreed to settle anyway, and on September 21 a federal judge in Chicago gave the deal preliminary approval.
Who gets what
There are two groups, and you can only be in one.
If you paid off at least one Bright Lending loan taken out between October 1, 2020 and June 4, 2026, youâre in the cash group, about 180,926 people. You split a $15 million fund based on how much interest you paid above what you borrowed. Nobody gets less than $15.
If you took a loan from October 2020 through December 2024 and never paid it off, youâre in the cancellation group, about 443,697 people. Your balance gets cut to zero. The plaintiffsâ lawyers put the total forgiven at more than $300 million.
Hereâs the catch on the cash. The plaintiffsâ own filing puts the gross average at $82.91 a person. The lawyers can ask for up to a third of the fund, and notice costs come out too. If they get the full third, whatâs left averages about $55 a person before administration costs. Borrowers who paid the most interest get more. Still, the average is smaller than one of Dixonâs biweekly payments, which were $308.40.
The debt wipe is the real money in this deal. The cash is a refund on a fraction of the interest.
Do this before December 21
Look for the notice. It went out by email first, with paper mail only if the email bounced, so search your inbox and spam folder for âBright Lending.â It has the ID number you need.
Go to brightlendingsettlement.com and switch your payment to ACH, PayPal, Venmo or Zelle by December 21. A check that never gets cashed is worth nothing, and only people who cashed the first round get any second distribution. Mailed checks have to be deposited within 120 days.
Check your estimate around November 15 using that ID number.
If you owe on a 2025 or 2026 loan, donât wait for this case to save you. It wonât. Compare what youâre paying against a credit union payday alternative loan capped at 28%, run the numbers in our loan calculator, and file a complaint with your state attorney general if your state caps rates.
The detail
Nothing changes until the settlement is final. The fairness hearing is January 19, 2027. The agreement says nothing requires cancellation, a stop to collections, or credit report fixes before the effective date. After it, Bright Lending has 30 days to zero out covered balances and to ask the credit bureaus to delete its negative entries. It only promises to ask. The bureaus decide. Pull your free reports a couple of months after the deal takes effect and dispute anything still there. Residents of Nevada and Utah are excluded. More on comparing small loans on our loans hub.
How Candid Yak makes money. Some of the products we write about pay us if you apply or sign up through our links. That never changes our verdict, our rankings, or the numbers in this article. We call a bad deal a bad deal whether it pays us or not. Some brands shown in our comparison tools are placeholder examples while we finalize partner agreements, and we label them as such.
