Your Car Insurance Finally Stopped Climbing. That's Exactly When to Re-Shop.

Updated September 12: the government's car insurance index fell 5.1% over the 12 months ending in August 2026, three straight monthly declines. Nothing else about owning a car got cheaper. A falling market is when your carrier counts on your loyalty. Here is why a switch pays now.

Update, September 12, 2026: Flat undersold it. The Bureau of Labor Statistics published August CPI on September 11, and the motor vehicle insurance index is down 5.1% over the past 12 months. Seasonally adjusted, it fell three months running: 2.0% in June, 0.3% in July, 0.8% in August. Now look at the rest of the car. Motor fuel is up 27.9% over the year, gasoline 27.4%, and motor vehicle maintenance and repair 5.2%. Insurance is the only line on your car budget that is genuinely getting cheaper, and a national index falling does not mail you a check. Your renewal is priced off your carrier’s filing and your file, not off the index. The advice below did not change. The reason to act on it got stronger.

If your auto insurance held flat at renewal this year, don’t relax. Flat is not the same as fair. After three brutal years, rates have stopped climbing, and that is the moment your carrier is counting on you to stop paying attention.

The average full-coverage policy runs about $186 a month, and it barely moved this spring, according to Insurify. Step back and the swing is bigger than it looks. Premiums jumped 46% from 2022 to 2024. Then in 2025 the average full-coverage premium actually fell 6%, to $2,144 a year, with 39 states seeing prices drop. Insurify expected a roughly 1% national rise for 2026, with prices up in 35 states and down in 15. That forecast has not held. Through August, the federal index says prices fell.

Here’s what they don’t tell you: a flat market does not mean your carrier handed back the increases it pushed through in 2024. The insurer that raised you 30% two years ago is not volunteering a cut now. It is betting that once the panic stops, so does your shopping.

Down 5.1%: the change in the motor vehicle insurance index over the 12 months ending August 2026, against a 27.4% rise in gasoline over the same year (Bureau of Labor Statistics).

The gap between carriers is still wide. Same driver, same car, same coverage, and the quotes can differ by hundreds a year, because each company weights your ZIP code, your credit, and your record its own way. When the whole market was spiking, switching often just bought you a smaller increase. Now that prices have settled, a switch can lock in a real, lower number. Worth shopping.

So pull three or four quotes the next time your policy comes up for renewal, with identical coverage limits so you are comparing the same thing. Mix a couple of big national names with a regional carrier or two, because the cheapest quote often comes from the company that does not run the most ads. Raise your deductible if you have the savings to cover it. Ask each carrier for the discounts you actually qualify for: multi-policy, low mileage, safe driver. One wildcard worth filing away: repair costs. Motor vehicle maintenance and repair rose 5.2% over the 12 months ending August 2026 even as premiums fell, and insurers have not fully passed that through yet. Translation: today’s calm could give way to the next round of increases. Lock a good rate while the market is soft, then re-check at every renewal. Loyalty is the one thing your insurer never pays you back for.

Frequently asked questions

Are car insurance rates going up in 2026?

Nationally, no. The Bureau of Labor Statistics motor vehicle insurance index fell 5.1% over the 12 months ending August 2026, and it declined three months in a row through August on a seasonally adjusted basis. That reverses the forecasts from earlier in the year, including Insurify's projected 1% national rise. The index is a national average, though, so your state and your carrier can still move against it. The only number that matters to you is the one on your renewal notice.

Is it worth switching car insurance if rates are stable?

Yes. Carriers price the same driver differently, so quotes can vary by hundreds of dollars a year. A stable market is when a switch locks in a lower number instead of just a smaller increase.
