If your savings is at Ally, the Fed handed your bank a raise on September 16. You got 40% of it.
The Fed lifted its target range by a quarter point, to 3.75 to 4%. Ally’s online savings account went from 3.00% APY to 3.10%. That’s a tenth of a point. The rest stayed with the bank.
What the rate page shows
Ally prints a date next to its rate. Archived copies of the page show 3.00% “correct as of” September 15, and again September 18, two days after the hike. By September 25 it read 3.10%. On October 20 it still did.
So the whole response to a quarter-point hike was a dime, and it showed up within nine days.
Then Ally filed its third-quarter results with the SEC on October 20. The average rate it paid across retail deposits was 3.05%, down from 3.12% the quarter before and 3.48% a year ago. That figure includes CDs, and only two weeks of the quarter came after the hike, so don’t read it as Ally cutting your savings rate. Read it as the direction of travel. It was still heading down when the Fed turned around.
Here’s the catch. Ally’s retail deposits shrank by $1.6 billion in the quarter. Over the past year, deposits that come in through brokers and other channels more than doubled, from $6.6 billion to $13.9 billion. And the earnings release still found room to boast about an “industry-leading customer retention rate.”
Translation: the bank’s bet is that you won’t check.
What it costs you
Run it on $25,000.
The Fed’s quarter point is worth $62.50 a year on that balance. Ally passed along $25.
At 3.10%, $25,000 earns about $775 a year. Barclays posted 4.25% APY on its savings account as of October 20 and 21, per SwitchWize and Yahoo Finance. At 4.25%, the same money earns about $1,063. That’s roughly $288 a year for one transfer.
Ally isn’t a bad bank. It’s a bank that used to lead on rate and now sits at 3.10%, the same as Capital One’s savings account, per SwitchWize. “High-yield” is a label. The APY is the rate.
Verdict: questionable. On a $2,000 cushion, the gap is a couple of lunches. On your emergency fund, it’s real money.
What to do before October 28
Log in and check your APY today. Write it down with the date.
The Fed meets again October 27 and 28. Whatever it decides, check your rate again a week later. If it hikes and your bank moves less than half the distance, you’ve learned how it treats you. If it holds, your bank has no excuse to drift lower.
Compare what you find against our best savings accounts page, and put your own balance into the savings calculator. Keep your checking where it is if you like it. Savings can live somewhere else, and an online transfer takes a few business days.
Read the fine print on any rate you move for. CIT Bank also shows 4.25% on Yahoo’s list, but that’s a 3.75% base plus a 0.50% bonus that lasts six months and needs a promo code. A standing variable rate can drop too. It just doesn’t come with an end date printed on it.
The detail
Ally’s supplement lists the average retail deposit rate by quarter: 3.48% in the third quarter of 2025, then 3.35%, 3.26%, 3.12%, and 3.05% in the third quarter of 2026. Retail deposits ended the quarter at $141.9 billion out of $155.8 billion in total deposits, from 3.6 million deposit customers. For why the national average savings rate sits so far below all of these, see our September breakdown of the FDIC’s 0.38% average. The savings hub has the rest.
